Amorphous graphite, also known as microcrystalline graphite, belongs to the category of cryptocrystalline graphite minerals, mainly distributed in Chenzhou, Hunan, Panshi, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi and other places in China. Its reserves in China account for 67% of the world's total, formed by coal field contact metamorphism, with a fixed carbon content of 65% to 88% (some can reach over 90%) and extremely low impurities such as sulfur and iron, earning it the nickname "golden sand". This ore has characteristics such as high temperature resistance (melting point of about 3850 ℃), electrical and thermal conductivity, and strong chemical stability.
According to morphology, it can be divided into dispersed and dense block types, with crystal diameters less than 1 micron. X-ray analysis shows that it contains 15% to 45% crystalline graphite. The ore can be processed into graphite powder (45-12000 mesh), graphite particles and graphite balls through flotation, chemical purification and other processes, which are widely used in casting release agents, refractory materials, battery electrodes and other fields.
The degree of metamorphism of amorphous graphite powder belongs to high-quality microcrystalline graphite, with the vast majority being graphite carbon. It has a hard gray color, metallic luster, soft texture, Mohs hardness of 1-2, specific gravity of 2-2.24, stable chemical properties, and is not affected by strong acidity or alkalinity. Earthly graphite has fewer harmful impurities and low iron, sulfur, phosphorus, nitrogen, molybdenum, and hydrogen content.
It is divided into two categories: "WT" - with iron requirements (commonly known as "electric carbon") and "W" - without iron requirements (commonly known as "casting"). The main products include graphite balls, graphite powder, graphite particles, and graphite sand, which are divided into 8 grades according to the fixed carbon content: 65, 70, 75, 78, 80, 83, 85, and 88. Graphite powder is divided into fineness of 45, 75, and 150um (equivalent to 325 mesh, 200 mesh, and 100 mesh, respectively)
Application Notes:
In the casting industry, graphite is applied to the surface of solids to form a firmly adhered smooth film, which is the excellent coating performance of graphite and is a good casting release agent. Commonly used graphite powders in casting include crystalline graphite powder (flake graphite powder) or cryptocrystalline graphite powder (earthy graphite powder, also known as microcrystalline graphite powder, black lead powder). Until now, many small factories in towns that manually shape and produce thin-walled small parts do not add coal powder to the molding sand, but use soft bristled brushes to brush soil like graphite powder onto the surface of the wet sand mold, casting castings with a relatively smooth surface. Although graphite powder does not form bright carbon during the pouring of molten iron, the wetting angle of graphite on the molten iron is much greater than 90 °, indicating that the sand mold is not wetted by the molten iron. Moreover, the pores on the surface are blocked by soil and stone toner, making it difficult for molten iron to penetrate and drill into the sand particles, which can prevent sand sticking to the casting and improve the surface smoothness of the casting. Graphite powder has a good lubricating effect, which improves the compactness and flowability of the molding sand, reduces its permeability, reduces the resistance of sample ejection, and improves the molding performance of the molding sand.
